When I first heard about Cool Girl syndrome, I tried everything I could to deny it. I wasn’t cool, no matter how I might have tried to be; wearing the right clothes hailed as cool by the popular crowd, pretending to watch documentaries instead of trash TV, telling everyone how much I loved electronic music then squirming in shame if any of my closer friends bought up my love for Taylor Swift. Little did I realise that the fixation with being accepted by others is the very essence of cool girl syndrome. Cool girl syndrome is less about being cool, and more about wanting to be seen as such.
